Virals

Virals by Kathy Reichs
Virals #1

Tory Brennan, niece of acclaimed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (of the Bones novels and hit TV show), is the leader of a ragtag band of teenage "sci-philes" who live on a secluded island off the coast of South Carolina. When the group rescues a dog caged for medical testing on a nearby island, they are exposed to an experimental strain of canine parvovirus that changes their lives forever.

As the friends discover their heightened senses and animal-quick reflexes, they must combine their scientific curiosity with their newfound physical gifts to solve a cold-case murder that has suddenly become very hot if they can stay alive long enough to catch the killer's scent.

Fortunately, they are now more than friends they're a pack. They are
Virals.

My Review:

When Tory and her friends discover an old dog tag on an island, their lives are changed forever.  They soon begin to experience strange symptoms, which they contribute to random sickness.  This sickness soon turns into heightened abilities that Tory is forced to used when she is confronted with a murder.  VIRALS by Kathy Reichs was my first experience with the Brennan family. I've seen a couple episodes of BONES on TV and was interested to find that they came from an author with a young adult novel. This book was filled to the brim with adventure. Tory and her three friends are thrust into a scandulous world of murder and science. I loved the scientific aspects of this book. It was a very differnt take on (I guess what you would call) a werewolf book. The characters were well-developed and extremely like-able. I'm not sure if there will be a Virals 2, but if so, I will certainly read it.
